No, we advise against configuring a printer to be used on the wireless network in our schools. While it is obviously a very convenient feature, we have experienced the following problems with wireless printing.
- It gives students complete and anonymous control over print jobs sent to that printer. The result of this can be bad. For example, a student can print a document containing obscenities, inappropriate photos, etc… to the printer and the teacher would have no way of knowing which student printed the document. Also, the student could print 1000 pages of a document and use all ink in a cartridge.
- Each wireless printer uses up one IP address. We limit the number of IP addresses per school.
- We have observed wi-fi interference caused by wireless printers that prevented students from accessing wi-fi on their laptops in a classroom.
