These instructions are based upon Chrome OS v59. Other versions may be slightly different.
With Chrome a student may try to use their microphone, camera or Adobe Flash but it won’t load or work for them. You will receive an error message or be asked to download and install a plugin. To resolve this issue, you must give permission to these devices/plugins to load.
In many cases, a pop-up will show and ask if you want to allow this device/plugin to run. Simply clicking allow should allow it to run and function properly.
In some cases, this pop-up will not show or the student may have already clicked Block. In this case click the “i” symbol in the URL bar to show permissions.
Select Allow beside the device or plugin. Reload the page and the plugin should properly load. This method works on the site that the student is on but is not a global setting. To allow a device or plugin to work on all sites you need to change the default setting. This will also allow you to block or allow sites.
Open the settings.
Select Advanced
Scroll down till you see Content settings and click on it.
Select the device or plugin you would like to manage.
Select to allow the device or plugin. You want the “allow sites to run” to be turned on (it will be blue in color.)
Within these settings you can also allow or block a website. If a student has blocked a website, unblock it to allow that device or plugin to run correctly.
If you are still seeing issues with a device/plugin be sure the device is up-to-date. If the device is out-of-date then it may not work correctly. If updating it does not work, you can power wash the Chromebook then have the student login, go and change the settings to allow and try again.
